Welcome to First Grade

Reading

Our reading program is Reading Streets by Scott Foresman.  This program is designed to differentiate instruction based on your child's needs.  Differentiated instruction is a varied response to learners' needs, generally, based upon various assessments, cooperative learning groups, attention to readiness levels and learning styles of children. Instructional and management strategies include components of Multiple Intelligences by Howard Gardner.  Implementation may also include specific rubrics offering choices with regard to various learning styles and readiness levels.

We will assess where the students are at the start of first grade and they will be placed into groups based on their needs.  We will work in small groups for phonics and reading work using activities to meet their needs and abilities.

Some important points about the reading program:
  • These are flexible groups.  Students will be moved from group to group depending on how their learning progresses.  We will constantly be reassessing to make sure students are in the group that will best facilitate their learning.
  • Students might be in different groups for phonics and reading.
  • No matter which group students are in they will be learning the same concepts.  The activities will be different depending on the needs of the student.
  • This program is divided into 5 units, each 6 weeks long.  When we come to the end of the unit there will be a unit test.
Math

In first grade, your child will build on last year's work and gain important new skills.  One of the most important outcomes for the year is to improve speed and accuracy adding with a sum of 20 or less and subtracting from a number 20 or less.  Working with multi-digit numbers and adding and subtracting with larger numbers is also a main focus.
