Extra Credit Assignment for all 5th and 6th Graders

Science Extra Credit for all 5th and 6th Graders

This assignment is OPTIONAL, but if you are behind in your e-learning work, this is worth 25 points, enough to make up one week of missing e-learning.  You may do this and submit it to me anytime before May 1.

Assignment: Watch the entire documentary The Bill Nye Film, it is free on Netflix or you can rent it on Amazon Prime or Google Play.  It is a great movie for the whole family (I made my family watch it the other night!) Then write a one page essay about the documentary, making sure to discuss some of the following topics:

  1. Who is Bill Nye?  Tell me about his family and his childhood.  What has he done with his life and how would you describe him as a person and a scientist?  What sacrifices has he made? How do you think he likes being “famous”?

  1. What are “science deniers”?  What is creationism and how is it different from evolution?  Who is Ken Ham and why is he “at war” with Bill Nye? How has Bill Nye changed some science deniers’ minds about evolution and science?

  1. Can you believe in evolution and also believe in God?  Explain why or why not.

  1. What is the device that Bill Nye and his company The Planetary Society have been working on?  Describe the device and why it is important.

  1. Do you think this is an important film?  What do you think Bill Nye wants you to know after watching the movie?

  1. How many stars do you give it out of 5?

SPECIALS FRIDAY 4/24

                                                Specials Friday

What? Fridays will be devoted to our Specialty classes: Spanish, STEM, Art, Music, P.E, Resource

When? 4-24; *; 5-8; 5-15; 5-22; 5-29   (please note that on 5-1 the teachers will have a professional                                                          development day and there will be NO e-learning that day)

How does this work? Students will not be assigned core-content e-learning on Specials Friday. INSTEAD, students will pick two Specials classes to focus on that day. They should visit the teacher’s blog page in order to complete activities provided there and follow the teacher’s directions for submitting the work, if applicable. The next “Specials Friday” they will choose different Specialty subjects so that they complete a range of activities. By May 29, they should have submitted two (or more) Specials activities for each subject.

Why? Queen of All Saints appreciates the whole child and offers specialty classes to promote Fine Arts, creativity, critical thinking, physical movement, etc. We want to provide time for our students to enjoy these offerings of our Specials teachers. Have fun and enjoy!

Should I only do Specials’ activities on Fridays now?  You are welcome to visit the teacher blog pages and work on Specials activities anytime. Students in Grades 6, 7, and 8 should follow Mrs. Acevedo’s blog and complete activities throughout the week.

Can kids in the same family work on the same activities? YES! There are many activities that could be done cooperatively or simultaneously. For example, pick a P.E. activity that works for all kids and do it together. Or choose an art project that all kids could do; it might be fun to see how different family members create different versions of the same project.

Will students receive a grade for Specials classes on their report cards? YES. Teachers will continue with the same evaluation system, so please make sure you follow the teacher’s direction about submitting the work.

Once I’ve completed the two Specials activities, can I use this day to “catch-up” on core subjects?  YES

MORE INFORMATION FOR MONDAY LESSONS

Hello!
Just when I thought I had this all figured out, of course there is yet another glitch.  I apologize for any confusion about any assignments for today.  It seems that by sharing today's assignments through Google Docs, I have neglected to give everyone editing power and, as I "allow" editing power through emails, we are all seeing the same document.

PLEASE FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS WHEN COMPLETING THIS WEEK'S ASSIGNMENTS
  • If you are working on Google Docs, please make a copy of the document I created before editing it, then share your copy with me.
  • You can download the Word Doc and edit that if you have this capability.
  • If you cannot seem to do either, you may draw or write the assignment on paper and take a picture to send me.
I hope this works!  I miss my real classroom and all of my students so much!!
Love and good wishes to you all!
Mrs. Zeman

Update Monday 3/23 Science Lessons

Some of you were having a difficult time uploading the files for today's assignment, so I have attached them as Word Docs.  I am hoping this makes it easier to access.  You may send me files or pictures via email. If you cannot edit the file, you also may write the information on paper and send me a picture.
Here's hoping this works!
